THE GOSPEL TRUTH
(Kenwood/Hyde Park)
As descendants of the transAtlantic and churchgoing, faith-having people, Jada-Amina and Anisa Olufemi believe that praise and worship spaces were invaluable sites of survival for their ancestors.
Their collaborative project The Gospel Truth (TGT) is anchored by a shared reverence for the Black radical tradition of creating secret, unsanctioned ecstatic sites which restore faith and preserve Black folks’ ancestral right to build new worlds. TGT explores the ways in which the sonic architectures of Chicago House and Go-Go Music offer communion, fellowship, and revival. Their cultural work is preoccupied with why these sonic respites were built, and the people who seek refuge within them.
By making space for feeling-focused testimonies and developing theory that breathes life into the sister city sounds / the moments they give rise to, The Gospel Truth amends the record and adds nuance to present day discourse surrounding Chicago House and Go-Go music.
