Inland Sea is an artist's book produced by Mary Clare Butler in 2015–16. The book is the culmination of a year long project where Butler traveled to 15 city beaches along Lake Michigan to make cyanotypes. The light sensitive sheets were exposed directly in the water allowing the movement of water and sand to create the image. The 150 cyanotypes were scanned and composed within the space of the book. Butler intuitively and responsively offset printed the book on a Heidelberg GTO offset press at Columbia College, mimicking the process of creating the cyanotypes using chance operations. The images are accompanied by poetic text drawn from observations of the people on each beach. After printing, Butler hand bound each book in the edition of 150.
