7000 Marks is an ongoing project made by the collaborative Sara Black and Amber Ginsburg. In 2016 they felled a Sudden Oak Death infected tanoak tree and transformed it into 7000 hand-made pencils for an ongoing installation and an additional edition of 500 for distribution. The pathogen P. Ramorum (SOD) has migrated on nursery trees to the United States killing massive oak stands. Trees infected with SOD are prohibited from movement until processed and dried. This tightening of boundaries aids in oak conservation, but also echoes a rising tide of global nationalism and anti-immigration sentiment. The pencil is a tool that allows us to creatively consider contemporary cross-species migration, forced and prohibited in an era of climate crisis. The larger exhibition will travel until all of the pencils are used. For details: https://www.amberginsburg.com/projects/7000-marks/
