"The images in Björkevägen reflect a tension I feel in the real and imagined space between belonging and being an outsider, between trying to enter a place and finding it, or myself, recalcitrant, seeing a world apart even as I approach it."

- Allen Wheatcroft

The photographs resonate with a sense of solitude and an introspective quietness. There is a peaceful sensibility inherent within them mixed with a sense of the distance and separation that accompanies any act of observation. Viewers will immerse themselves in these images, and by extension, in the typical aesthetics of this place, bringing their own narrative interpretations and emotional connections or curiosity. In presenting a collection of photographs that are of his own personal experience of Sörmland, then editing and sequencing them as a journey along Birch Road, Wheatcroft shares a literal as well as "imagined excursion through Sörmland."

(Andersonville)

Allen Wheatcroft lives in Andersonville on Chicago’s Northside and spends several months in Sweden every year. After publishing Body Language (Damiani 2020) — a book of street photos from cities in Europe and the US — he turned his attention to exploring more deeply the built environment where he lives and spends his time. The result of these explorations is the publication, in April 2024, of companion books on Chicago and Sweden — The Northside and Björkevägen (Birch Road).
