Breiðamerkursandur Risograph Print

On the eastern side of Iceland the massive Vatnajökull glacier melts into the Jökulsárlón iceberg lagoon. Seal-sized chunks float out through a small channel into the Atlantic and then get washed back onto the shore of a black sand area called Breiðamerkursandur.

I spent some time taking portraits of these beached, waning icons through a diffraction lens to capture their bursting light-modulating effects. This one was my favorite.

Printed CMYK (Aqua / Fluorescent Pink / Yellow / Black) with @coloramaprint in Berlin this past November and photographed in Iceland as an artist-in-residence @simresidency in October.

Kacie Lees
(Pilsen)

Kacie Lees (b. 1986 — St. Louis, Missouri, she/her) is a professor in Art & Technology Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an interdisciplinary artist working in video, neon, and print. Living and working out of New York and Chicago, Lees’ constellatory practice blurs studio experimentation with instructional design. She studies polychromatic smears (i.e. holograms, oil slicks, rainbows, aurora) and the poetic power of optics to gain immersive insight into the dynamics of working with light as a tactile medium.
