Neon Primer: A Handbook on Light Construction is an educational text illuminating the hidden nature of light via the craft of neon bending. Saturated with golden footnotes sourced from exhibition catalogs, pivotal light art works, films, etymology, and classic cultural influences such as Schoolhouse Rock!, this handbook assesses the psycho-historical impact of advertising on neon and provides a premise for quantifying “the glow” by way of its material components.

Kacie Lees (b. 1986 — St. Louis, Missouri, she/her) is a professor in Art & Technology Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an interdisciplinary artist working in video, neon, and print. Living and working out of New York and Chicago, Lees’ constellatory practice blurs studio experimentation with instructional design. She studies polychromatic smears (i.e. holograms, oil slicks, rainbows, aurora) and the poetic power of optics to gain immersive insight into the dynamics of working with light as a tactile medium.
