Janet Lopez stems from a family of traditional tule weavers from the state of Michoacán, Mexico. López currently lives and works in Chicago, IL and earned a Bachelors in Fine Arts from The School of the Art Institute with a focus in Sculpture and Fiber & Material Studies. Her research includes the study of regional specific fibers used as a material for weaving in the rural villages of northern Michoacán and the imprint the craft has on its surrounding culture and environment. Her recent endevours explore welding and metal bending practices to intertwine with functional woven structures.
